Yes, I fixed the problem by a "chmod +r" on each of the files installed 
by install.py.

The TeXLive installation did not create /etc/texmf/web2c/updmap.cfg, so 
the updmap commands in the gregorio instllation failed.  I had to create 
updmap.cfg myself (by copying /etc/texmf/web2c/updmap-hdr.cfg into it. 
I didn't try to process any other TeX files besides gregoriotex files.

Thanks; if I go through this installation on another Mandriva machine, 
I'll take notes next time.
