The situation for the alternates in greextra is a bit different (but only a little bit). However, the case of the stropha applies to only one font. However, depending on how we do this, there's really not much difference. I suspect no one has used the current variants in a very long time, or they would have gotten some weird output because the font didn't match the hard-coded code points. There was also a missing \fi which would have only caused a problem if someone tried to change the variant style within a single document.
