There really isn't a naming convention. Naming your files that way can
help with name collisions, but with a multi-file project it becomes more
and more unwieldy. Changing the default extension is a simple way to
greatly reduce the possibility of collision with an existing file.

Now, with the autocompile feature, it is possible, and quite tempting,
to name your main file and score file with the same base name. Run
gregorio directly on the gabc file and you lose the main file.

I have lost many main files this way because I tend to type what I see
and one sidewards glance later, and I've lost my work.

Since we are bumping to 4.x with develop, this is a good time as any to
institute this change.

If anyone is against the change, I welcome the discussion.

Regards,
Henry
