The renaming currently underway has resurfaced an idea that I had a
while ago, which is to allow pluggable centering schemes. The current
syllable centering is good for what it is, but the default centering
around vowels is specifically for Ecclesiastical Latin, especially with
how it handles i and j, which are can function as semi-vowels. This is
fine, for Latin, but sometimes I would like rules for English, for which
y can act as a semi-vowel. I can easily add this in C, but then I
thought about making it easier for someone to specify their own
centering. It would seem to me that Lua is the simplest to embed, but
that adds an additional dependency.

So my questions are:

- Would it be permissible to add this dependency?
- Would adding such a dependency interfere with a possible inclusion
  into TeX Live?
- Is this a bad idea?

Thanks,
Henry
