I did consider using xstring functions, but the problem is handling verbatims and special characters and styling of the first letter.

\ifgre@vowelcentering becomes a count (\gre@lyriccentering).

Use \ifcase\gre@lyriccentering in \GreSetThisSyllable.  Case 0 and 1
