Michael Martin: Thanks for your comments. I, too, have a Liber and can see your point about staff lines running across the page. It looks like that's just the way it is done in Gregorian notation.
To skin the cat a different way I am breaking each numbered entry into its own gabc file and will then try to combine them by including them all in a single enlarged main.tex file -- as was apparently done in the Benedictio Mensae example in the Gregorio documentation.
