Well, my experience - but it is mine, and I cannot extrapolate -
is that the people I get interested in singing gregorian are all
people that had some musical education, and therefore are used at
singing from full scores. Having to look for symbols in the text
where to bend the melodic line is very disturbing for them.
in my opinion, if you want to sing gregorian chant with people used to
sing from standard musical scores, you have to try to get rid of the
connection to standard notation as much as it is possible. Singing
psalms is the very basic when singing gregorian chant. Everyone can
learn it quite easily without notes at all (just mark importent
sylables in the lyrics for them). It is much easier to learn them how
to sing it properly this way. It can be disturbing for them at the
beginning, but you will achieve much better results than with full scores.
Try to sing a psalm with them every rehearsal for 10 minutes, the same
Tone. When they are used to it, change the psalm (lyrics)... later
change the Tone. If you proceed like this, I promise you succes.
:)
I fear this is a discussion that can go on for ages, and never come to
an end.
If I would follow this road, I can assure you that within a year I'll be
standing before 2 or 3 people instead of 10 now. People now are not used
to the idiom of Gregorian anymore and what they love to sing are the
more melodic pieces (Introitus, Communio, Gloria's, hymns of Good Friday
etc...). To be blunt: psalms are boring, and they sing them because they
have to be sung at certain times. Period. And people which have to
listen .......
I mentioned it on other messages: people who sing with me are for the
majority NOT religious people, they have a love for making music, and
gregorian has in its simplicity (one voice, no accompaniment) a certain
charm and challenge that attracts them to it.
And to make another blunt statement: the advantage of (very) old music,
is that all the rubbish that ever has been written or sung, has been
filtered out by time, and that makes gregorian again attractive to
people with a certain musical taste.
