Update, literally.
So, after some rooting around I determined that the original install
disks for the machine I use (which belongs to another member of my
community) were available and they were for OS 10.6. I was using 10.5
because I was using my old hard drive from before I entered the
monastery. Using those install disks I updated my hard drive's OS to
10.6.8, and then followed the instructions for compiling from source on
the website. Now everything works as expected. No errors in the
installation process. No errors when typesetting.
