The development version is quite stable. I, for one, recommend it over 2.3 (which is way out of date at this point). There should probably be a 2.4 release put into the download area and the current folder relinked to it, but I haven't gotten around to that yet. I've had enough trouble just checking my email recently due to Internet problems.
As to the screwy InDesign import, it looks like the problem is associated with the text font. At least from what I can see in the image you posted, the distortions are associated with particular letters in the lyrics. Each time the letter repeats the same distortion shows up. Have you tried using a different text font?
