Exactly the commands you gave (link).
Steps:
0. boot live CD
1. run grml2hd to usb drive with mbr
2. reboot to usb drive, login as root
3. make changes you gave:
cp -a /root /home/
mv /root /root.old
ln -s /home/root /root
4. reboot to usb drive again
