Yes. Applications generally register at launch. A few do it later, but  
at launch is the norm.

Firefox: Which version number does it say in the About window?

Yahoo! Messenger: Go to Yahoo! Messenger's Preferences window and make  
sure you have the “Display a notification” checkbox checked for every  
event you want it to post a Growl notification for.

Note that Yahoo! Messenger doesn't support posting Growl notifications  
for incoming messages, so if you want that, you'll have to use Adium,  
instead.
