Your original request was a “thank you for donating!” sign. That means either a checkbox labeled “I donated” or a licensing system. With regard to a licensing system, he did give you a good reason. A licensing system is very complex to get right, and we have other things to do (like fix bugs and improve core functionality—that is, receiving and displaying notifications). That leaves a checkbox, which is much simpler. But remember, we have two and a half active developers, so even little things like a checkbox take up a disproportionate amount of developer time that isn't worth it compared to fixing bugs and improving core functionality. If we had, say, half a dozen developers, I'd happily have one of us throw in a checkbox and call it done.
