I've had this problem in earlier version of Snow Leopard too. Notice the growl icon has not loaded. When I move my mouse near the top left of the screen (near the apple logo) and double click. The Apple menu then goes back to normal. The growl icon then shows. Please let me known if you require any more further information. Will be happy to help.
