Hi ! For a while, I've had screen corruptions leading to a total computer freeze when playing WoW. I have more and more the impression that this /could/ be caused by Growl notifications. For a few times now, I have noticed that this freeze happens "a few milliseconds" after a notification has appeared.
Unfortunately, I only have one Mac so I cannot log in from another computer into my frozen computer to get a sample. My frozen computer is only frozen in the video layer, because the sounds form the game continues, so do the other applications running along WoW such as Skype or Ventrilo for instance. If I leave my computer on, this visual freeze slowly propagates like a disease to all the aspects of the computer until it becomes frozen stiff from side to side (every other app eventually hang too). There is no point in waiting, though, because I cannot do anything anyway when this video freeze happens : I cannot switch to another app, I cannot use the dialog that usually appears when one briefly presses the power button. The only thing I can do is doing a hard shut-down. As an example, this is what happened tonight. I was playing WoW (of course), and the application was frontmost (of course). SuperDuper was running in the background to do the daily backup of my User folder to my network disk. At 20:27, the screen froze (when this happens, the image becomes scrambled as if the wrong textures were accessed to paint elements on screen). After restarting (I waited a few minutes), I saw that SuperDuper had finished his daily backup at exactly the same time. And obviously SuperDuper uses Growl to notify my of the result. Unfortunately, this bug cannot be reproduced at will. It happens now and then (say 4 times out of 7). This is why it took me a while to find the link with Growl. However, I've noticed it quite a few times recently (I have Growl notifications from many apps.) Unfortunately too, this really looks like a nightmarish bug. I'm not a programer so I don't know how to help you in finding the cause. Of course, I have tried disabling Growl before playing WoW, and I must say that I did not have crash then, but unfortunately, the randomness of the crash makes it hard to use this fact as a strong proof. SuperDuper itself cannot be the cause because the app quit gracefully after ejecting the disk, as can be seen in the app's log. Of course, I still had my daily backup done even when I disabled Growl notifications. (So that Growl would be the only variable as much as possible.) I have never had such a video freeze even if WoW was running when WoW was in the background (say I am looking at a website). WoW runs in windowed mode, full screen. I have the latest version of WoW (3.3.2)... and Growl 1.2. Here's the system message log, starting with the last few messages from Racoon until the first restart messages. There are a few minutes missing between the disk eject and the first OpenGL error messages. I think the system was "stunned", because I can attest the freeze occurred at 20:27 ————————————————————————————————————— 2010-03-03 20:26:01 racoon[28] IKE Packet: transmit success.
