As I run growl as a launchd controlled user agent, using the pref is much easier than stopping and restarting growl.
I have no idea how representative I am of most users in setting something like this up; I decided that it was worth it several revisions ago when growl crashing was a much more regular occurrence (do not think I have had a crash for almost 2 years now).
