Well, tech support at Karelia suggested that I restart my machine after installation and low and behold, Growl appeared in Sys Pref. and the Growl and Sandvox icons were there for "registration". I set the sound and visual notification options for Sandvox, did another restart, and the visual notifiication works great but still no audio.
I have been looking for an email address to report the bug but Growl seems to have that contact info well hidden. The only thing I have found for help is this discussion group. If you know of another way to contact growl tech folks, let me know. I'll go back and look again. Thanks for the tip.
