The problem is not with Growl, it is that the MacBook Pro is constantly polling the Ethernet port. The only way to prevent this is go to system preferences / Networking / Highlight the Ethernet port then at the bottom is the gear click the gear and choose disable port. Understand if you use a wired network you will have enable the port again.
