The sparkle branch is where we're working on implementing Sparkle. I don't know whether it's complete or not. If it's complete I'd like it integrated into 1.2.1 actually.
Regarding mercurial, once you're done with the tutorials and have better information, I think that's a good time to start asking us questions. Typically I tell people to work on what they feel they would benefit from the most. So for instance, if you think that downloading and installing the extras over and over again is a pain, you might benefit from the idea of an Extras tab, with automated updating/installation/uninstall/configuration. Probably the best starting point is to find a very small problem, in order to start getting familiar with Growl. Growl has been worked on by about 30 people, with different coding styles and whatnot, so there are bound to be issues just based on that. We prefer cocoa code over carbon code where possible.
