When I get a notification (I use smoke style), the notification window fades in. As it fades in, the fonts are all nice and skinny. Once it reaches the set transparency (mine at 71%) and enters the countdown period, the font becomes bold (slightly fatter). I cannot reproduce this in the preference where you can test out the styles, it only happens when there is an actual notification. My guesstimation is that the underlying WebKit is changed by Safari 5.
