Here's what I start up pertaining to Growl, for my account.....GrowlTunes, GrowlSafari, HardwareGrowler, GrowlHelper App, and iTunesHelper. I do not launch Safari or iTunes upon log in. The Growl apps are there for me when I do launch the parent apps.
