It appears that this is a known problem:

http://code.google.com/p/growl/issues/detail?id=105

That said, my default account is not the MobileMe account. I have
made the default account the first account in the list of accounts in
Apple Mail. I have also changed the "To" address in MailMe to that
same account address. The console message remains the same… somehow
MailMe insists on looking for the SMTP server for MobileMe and not for
the default account as established in Apple Mail. Regardless of what
I try to do the same result occurs - MailMe tries to send mail through
the MobileMe SMTP server.

I hope this helps. Thanks again for your assistance.
