As someone guilty of doing what they'll advise against (but only
in a non-business home use context), the obvious alternative is
to not update the OS until updates for GrowlMail (and anything
else that's likely to need them) supporting the new OS update have
come out too.

That particular precaution may or may not meet your needs;
but as a practical matter, very few people really _need_ to grab
an OS update within a few hours or even a few weeks of when it
comes out, unless it has a fix or feature they really need, in
which case, they need to decide what they're willing to risk
breaking for the sake of installing the OS update early.

(however...if there's a way that works for the developers and
within what Apple will allow, it would sure be great to close
the window entirely and be able to have a 10.x.y+1 ready
GrowlMail update out _before_ 10.x.y+1 goes official...a
simpler user experience and a lot less repetitive discussion if
that could happen. I wonder if Apple could be asked if just the
magic UUIDs could be incorporated in something to be released
before an update becomes official...I wonder if donations would
cover Mac Developer Program subscriptions for the developers...)
