I was just reading another one of these threads from users complaining
about Growl being repeatedly reinstalled by some app.
It occurred to me that there could be a feature designed to help users
out of that annoying (for everyone) situation.
You know how the Dashboard prompts you to "Keep" or "Remove" a new
widget when you first open it? Couldn't Growl do the same?
The first time Growl is launched after installation, it could say
"Growl is a free notification service. Click here to learn more." with
buttons to {Remove} or {Keep}
Clicking Remove would prompt the user to uninstall Growl. It could
also record the user's choice in the Growl preferences. If an app
reinstalls Growl, upon first launch Growl would see that the user had
previously chosen to remove it. It could then present a different set
of options: {Disable} or {Keep}. Choosing Disable would turn off all
notifications, turn off the update check, etc. Keep would revert the
user's prior choice to Remove Growl.
Hope this helps.
