Growl hasn't had an update since July of this year. You have some other
problem, probably two copies of Growl installed.
We suggest running the uninstaller (see link below) and then, if you want to
(it sounds like you won't), reinstalling Growl.

Growl does not install itself without your permission. A few other applications
install it without your permission, and you should be pissed at the developers
of whichever one(s) you use(d).

Our own installer (which you would have run in order to update) only installs
Growl in one place, so if an application installed Growl in the wrong place,
that'd be how you got two copies.
