You may like to use a beta version of Colloquy, it's very stable and doesn't have 32bit issues with Growl.

Hi, thanks!

So, answers:

yes, I do use TextWrangler every day... will check it. Also, Colloquy
have some "32bit only" fix applied (I remember it having problems when
running as 64bit. This is maybe not the case with latest one I use, but
the "32bit" is still there -- I just remembered).
yes, I do have HP printer, and it was _updated_ from Apple Software
Update a month ago or so.... will check it too.
no, I did not download Google+Growl, I downloaded "vanilla" notifier
from here: http://toolbar.google.com/gmail-helper/notifier_mac.html (or
Google provides that Google+Growl now as their own plugin?)

But I did validate that there's only one growl process, so I would still
suspect on TextWrangler/Colloquy then.

Thanks,

Another possibility is that you're using an application like
TextWrangler that uses the Growl Carbon API. Our Carbon API has a
    bug that causes this.

If you already have Growl, it's unlikely that any application would
install a second Growl. Dropbox will only install if you don't
already have it. The two applications I know of that do install
unconditionally (Adobe CS5 installer and an HP printer driver
installer*) would overwrite your existing Growl, not install a
    second one.

At any rate, if you have checked and confirmed that you don't have
two Growls, this is not the problem.

Notifier/GoogleGrowl.plugin/Contents/Frameworks/Growl-WithInstaller.framework

That's our installer framework. (Dropbox uses it, too, but bypasses
    its permission check.)

it was the case in one of their older versions and updater did not
    clean it up?

Google Notifier doesn't install or support Growl.

The Google+Growl plug-in, which you downloaded and installed
separately, uses our installer framework. I haven't tested it
myself, but I know its author, and on those grounds, I rather doubt
it abuses our installer framework the same way Dropbox does. (Of
course, Jesper, you're welcome to speak for yourself here.)

*We only recently confirmed this, so it's not on the list yet, but
    it will be.
