Another possibility is that you're using an application like TextWrangler that
uses the Growl Carbon API. Our Carbon API has a bug that causes this.

If you already have Growl, it's unlikely that any application would install a
second Growl. Dropbox will only install if you don't already have it. The two
applications I know of that do install unconditionally (Adobe CS5 installer and
an HP printer driver installer*) would overwrite your existing Growl, not
install a second one.

At any rate, if you have checked and confirmed that you don't have two Growls,
this is not the problem.

That's our installer framework. (Dropbox uses it, too, but bypasses its
permission check.)

Google Notifier doesn't install or support Growl.

The Google+Growl plug-in, which you downloaded and installed separately, uses
our installer framework. I haven't tested it myself, but I know its author, and
on those grounds, I rather doubt it abuses our installer framework the same way
Dropbox does. (Of course, Jesper, you're welcome to speak for yourself here.)

*We only recently confirmed this, so it's not on the list yet, but it will be.
