10.6.6 for me too. I got it using The Unarchiver. This may be some clue, I pulled this out of Console: 2/26/11 18:37:05 [0x0-0x24f24f].com.apple.archiveutility[6414] tar: Pathname in pax header can't be converted to current locale.: Inappropriate file type or format.
2/26/11 18:37:07 [0x0-0x24f24f].com.apple.archiveutility[6414] tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors. Don't know if those help or not.
