Thanks for your help. So I triple checked everything. I only have one version of hardware growler on my machine, and I've disabled the dock icon for that version. Checking in activity monitor confirms that when I get the duplicate popups, there is still only one instance of hardware growler running.
Quitting hardware growler and then ejecting/mounting a drive leads to only one popup appearing. So my suspicion now is that some other control panel or app that I've installed is set up to display these messages in growl (an app that must duplicate some, but not all of the hardware growler features) Thoughts?
