It seems I am able to provide a ready made and free solution to this
problem as a stand alone answer to this issue specifically. On TUAW
yesterday (UK time) an article posted about a free app called
UnPlugged reproduces the same function as HardwareGrowler with regard
to the power supply, except their take on it addresses the very
problems I mentioned.

It's called "UnPlugged" and is free, has a nicer icon and a little
more flexibility.
