It seems I am able to provide a ready made and free solution to this problem as a stand alone answer to this issue specifically. On TUAW yesterday (UK time) an article posted about a free app called UnPlugged reproduces the same function as HardwareGrowler with regard to the power supply, except their take on it addresses the very problems I mentioned.
It's called "UnPlugged" and is free, has a nicer icon and a little more flexibility. ref: http://www.tuaw.com/2011/07/04/tuaws-daily-mac-app-unplugged/ Thanks!
