Growl should probably be considered as a solution to an existing problem rather 
than a solution of its own.

For example, if you're getting notifications from various disparate apps or 
you'd like to collate and forward notifications to a single point then it's for 
you; otherwise probably not.

Really, the flow would go:

Download some productivity app
See that app has Growl* support
Download Growl
Enjoy

To remove, delete it from the Mac App Store on your computer.

IMO it's incorrectly listed in the MAS in Productivity; it should be under 
Utilities.
