Here's where it gets interesting - having been on the road without
desktop or laptop for several weeks I booted up the laptop and Growl
was working absolutely fine there.

The only difference between the laptop (fully functioning Growl on all
my key apps) and the desktop (Growl doesn't appear for ANY app with v
1.3.1, period) is that the laptop is still on the website download
while the desktop is on the Mac App Store version. I didn't have time
to update the laptop from the Mac App Store before my business trip,
so the Mac App Store version of Growl appears to be the problem.

To test this out, I uninstalled the Mac App Store version of Growl
(v1.3.1) and re-downloaded the previous version from the website
(v1.2.2).

Bingo - Hazel, OmniFocus, Keyboard Maestro etc are now working again
with Growl and the notifications show up, whew.

They don't disappear, but right now I'm very thrilled to get them
back.

So, my conclusion from this experience is that the Mac App Store
version is not functioning well with Lion at the moment - maybe it's
because the apps I'm using are sandboxed or something.
