There are apps that have blue icons for new content, but for paused it's
pretty standard to put a more subdued icon in place. Fantastical has a
different icon that looks pretty nice, and so does Dropbox. That said, they
also have preferences for black icons. I'm ok with changing things if it
makes sense, but I'm not ok with a preference for it, if that makes sense.

You know that you paused Growl. Why do you need an icon which is more
annoying telling you that you paused it? That's the solution that you're
presenting, so what's the problem? :)
