The problem is that as monitors are getting larger, the menu is getting smaller, which makes it harder to tell at a glance what the status of a menu item is. Big differences, such as the flashing Growl icon are easy to spot. Subtle differences such as the same icon that's either gray or black can be hard to recognize at a glance, especially if the Growl icon isn't next to another black icon in the menu bar. I barely notice a difference between the paused gray Growl icon and the standard black icon. I was doing a presentation and notifications started popping up. I thought for sure I'd paused Growl, but I hadn't.
The reason why it matters is this: you said "You know that you paused Growl. Why do you need an icon which is more annoying telling you that you paused it?" Generally speaking, pausing Growl is done for times when one doesn't want notifications popping up, which may often include times when one steps away from their Mac. If I'm doing a presentation, I don't want notifications popping up, so I pause Growl. After a while, it's easy to forget Growl is paused, especially if you left the room or started working on something else. Growl pretty much IS the notification system for the Mac, right? I'd think that pausing the notification system deserves to be a bit more obvious in the tiny menu bar than the difference between #000 and #333. I'm not complaining. I think Growl is fantastic and I'm amazed that Apple hasn't bought it and built it into the OS. I'd just like it to be more obvious at a glance of the menu bar that Growl is or isn't active.
