I have the same problem, I've reinstalled osx completely (now on 10.7.4) and it only gives me the update function, giving me the above error message.
Growl is not installed anywhere. I also ran the growl uninstaller, but that made no difference. I've deleted ApplicationSupport/Growl, but still the only option is to update, which gives me that error. I imported my account from the old drive, so it's still the same account I'm trying to use it on, but even had I not I should be able to install growl again. Henk.
