I had a similar problem when I wanted to update Growl in order to try to 
fix other problems with it.

I deleted all Growl related files using AppZapper as logging in and out 
didn't alleviate the problem.
AppZapping let me install from scratch using the App Store. Hope I don't 
have to do that again every time there's an update, though.
