I am having this exact issue. Using both a 2011 MacBook Air and 2011 MacBook Pro. Both on 10.7.4, both using the latest App Store version of Growl. Fans will begin to spin full-speed, and it's Growl running at 100%+ CPU every single time. If I click the menu item during this time, it'll crash. I have crash logs that I can send, but rather not post them publicly.
