For what it's worth… if you turn OFF the built-in preference to launch Growl, you can make your own "launch at login" using launchd:
https://gist.github.com/3077077 This will keep Growl running and (should) restart it if it crashes. If you want to quit Growl, you can do so in the usual manner. Growl will not re-launch after a manual exit until you launch it, or until you login again. This worked for me. I don't have automatic login enabled, but I do use FileVault 2 on Lion. TjL ps - I made the plist (which is what the gist is) using Lingon 3 http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/lingon-3/id450201424?mt=12 which is, IMO, well worth $3 if you use launchd, like, ever. :-) pps - I sent this before but I think it was from the "wrong" account.
