For what it's worth… if you turn OFF the built-in preference to launch Growl, 
you can make your own "launch at login" using launchd:

This will keep Growl running and (should) restart it if it crashes.

If you want to quit Growl, you can do so in the usual manner. Growl will 
not re-launch after a manual exit until you launch it, or until you login 
again.

This worked for me. I don't have automatic login enabled, but I do use 
FileVault 2 on Lion.

which is, IMO, well worth $3 if you use launchd, like, ever. :-)
