Apple's NotificationCenter is a new to Mountain Lion (10.8) feature,
10.7 has no built in system. Some apps are using our newer framework
that has its own built in style (mist), a dark style that is similar
to smoke. Some apps have rolled their own for when Growl isn't
around, such as dropbox. Even on MountainLion, if you want any
customization, Growl is the way to go, as NC offers no style or
position choices.
