I found the solution to my problem. It was quite funny, as well. I have an external hard drive that I use to automatically back up my computer. When it was connected, a bug within app store saw an old version of growl (and another app) on on the drive and decided it was necessary to tell me my app needed upgrading. Long story short (because I don't know how to explain the technical issues with it), it couldn't upgrade. I finally found the solution. The first step was to dismount and disconnect the external hard drive. I can't remember the next step though. I don't remember if I needed to delete any caches or if it was as simple as restarting my computer. I wish I could remember for your sake. Still, start with doing that and rebooting. If that doesn't help, use google to search for this deleting app store cache.
I mentioned it was funny because I was putting off updating apps because I had a system upgrade, and I just happened to decide to do it when I had that drive connected. Had I done it before or after connecting the drive, I wouldn't have had a problem, so it is weird that I decided to upgrade right at that moment.
