I got a cat back on my 05 Evo VIII and it made a significant difference to me.  I got the RSR ExMag exhaust.  The one that looks stock, IMO I think the exhaust not any louder then the stock at all.  If you want a performing exhaust that isn't loud, you might want to take a look at the RalliArt one on modacar.com but the exhaust pipe is only 65mm, or the Silient Hi Power exhaust from HKS on bulletproofautomotive.com and that one has a 75mm piping.  Or you can buy my RSR.

than I would have guessed. I was actually able to keep up with him,

factory exhaust on the Evo is supposed to be a common choke point.
