Your right, there will be big power loss (like a slidding clutch) if you dont lock the gearbox of a Awd trany and use it as Fwd trany.Yes you can lock the AWD gearbox to work as FWD. You have to remove the Viscous Coupling to do that, and have it welded( the splines) and put it back so that the Center Differential and the Center Shaft will turn together. You can just leave the Center Shaft where it is and remove the transfer case instead coz you wont need it. Done it a dozen times here in the Philippines. We even use it for drag racing. But make sure you use a very good welding equipment so as not to weaken the welding done. If you decide to convert to a Awd, you just have to replace the viscous coupling to make it an awd trany again. Hope this helps!
