* Why does a simple job submission like the above use gsiftp?
Answered by Martin. I will elaborate that the GASS cache was a source of problems with the older GRAM implementations, pretty much all of which have been resolved now by using GridFTP via RFT.
There is an additional performance improvement in GT4.0.5 and newer to use local invocations between GRAM and RFT: http://www.globus.org/toolkit/docs/4.0/execution/wsgram/admin-index.html#s-wsgram-Interface_Config_Frag-rft-invoc
You may find that it improves your GRAM performance a little more also. Please be sure to apply the gram/rft/gridftp advisories available for your version of GT from http://www.globus.org/toolkit/advisories.html?version=4.0 .
* What was the original intent of these log lines?
To add logging to syslog about who had used GridFTP
* Can the desired effect of the log lines be had some other way?
Using the syslog output from the current GridFTP should be sufficient to audit the DN/usernames that use GridFTP.
