Take a look at the Globus Toolkit Quickstart Guide: http://www.globus.org/toolkit/docs/4.2/4.2.1/admin/quickstart/#quickstart.

If you have a file ending in tar.bz2 you can extract the contents by giving the command:

tar xvjf filename.tar.bz2

Also, if you have a file ending in tar.gz you can extract the contents by giving the command:

tar xvzf filename.tar.gz

If you simply have a tar file, the contents can be extracted by giving the command

tar xvf filename.tar
