If you don't have read the book, it's highly
recommended.

I'm far from being a GTD-expert, but I'll try
to share my impressions.

In the collect phase, you must ask yourself
"What is this? This is actionable?" for each
item of your inbox stuff.  After process the
(non-actionable) items, they'll be classified
in one of the following:

a) Trash.  Items non-actionable that you don't
really need anymore;

b) A thought or an idea for the future.  A
thing that you will not do in the present, but
would like to reconsidering in the future;

c) A Reference.  An item that you don't wanna
trash because is important to support your
activities in some manner but is not related
directly with none of your projects.

Months ago I've tried to start an implementation
of GTD and I made a big collect of all of my
stuff.  My annotations, books, some friend's
business cards, and so on were items that I've
retained for reference.
