Yes, I noticed it myself too that GTK1 doesn't have these assertions.
However, the gtk1 interface doesn't just increase the refcount, where
the search_gui2.c file does. 
Actually, I am not sure of the assertions in the GTk2 interface are
correct, so just adding them to the GTK1 interface might not be the
correct solution.
