Let me decipher, that string is:

    Pango[hyphen]WARNING[space][asterisk][asterisk][colon]\
      [space]Invalid[space]UTF[hyphen]8[space]string\
      [period][period][period]

If an asterisk isn't ASCII, probably that's the reason (because
that mail had `Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII',
`Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit').
