I hope you have resolved this issue.  I have gdb version 6.0.  I think
that maybe GDB is having trouble with the copied executable.  You
might try,

    cd $CORE_DIR
    gdb -n -c ./core -se ./gtk-gnutella

It is possible that gdb is looking at the gtk-gnutella executable
where you compiled and/or ran it.  Also, the "-n" option should
suppress any .gdbinit commands that might interfere with running gdb.
