Sadly I'm still no further on. I can't get gdb-6.0 to compile with 
gcc-4.1.2. I tried the commands that you suggested but the result was 
the same

cd /home/andy/.gtk-gnutella/core2007.02.27.03.21.23

If I can't help debug the crashes I may as well run the latest stable 
release. gtk-gnutella-0.96.3 has been up for 5d 6h
