I agree. I've been running a git-svn mirror of gtkg for some time now.
It makes marshaling multiple patches so much easier as well.

There is also the FLOSS based gitorius. However I currently host a lot
of git repos on github and it's merging and pull request tools are
very handy. About the only thing they don't handle is mailing lists.

However there are no reasons why development can't be distributed
between github and sourceforge.
