I've tried in a fresh install, and it did work ok.
Surely was a binary-packages/source-build mess :-(

The documentation is correct. Are you sure you don't have both gtk# 1.0
and 2.4 installed? If you're using pkg-config or "mcs -pkg:", you need
to ask for gtk-sharp-2.0, not gtk-sharp.
